Be safe and shoot straight
I hunt out near Vernon a lot. I was just out there this past
weekend, way too windy to do any calling the day I went out.
Erickson Pass Road has some good areas to call in dogs, but
I think they get a lot of pressure. Watch out for that State
Park enforcement officer, he hangs out near the top of the
Pony Express Trail a lot. He'll bust you if you aren't far
enough off the dirt roads when you shoot. Fish Springs has
a lot of hunting restrictions within the refuge. I think you
can only hunt waterfowl out there. Outside the refuge is a
different story. I think it is almost better to head out
towards Nevada. In the time it takes me to get to Vernon
from Salt Lake, I could make it out to Wells where the
coyotes are much easier to call. Overall, you hear a lot of
gun shots out near Vernon, so you have to do some extra
work to get to places where coyotes aren't being scared off.
The western edge of skull valley is probably a little more
productive. I also heard that there are some good spots
down near Fillmore. My suggestion is to drive around, do
some siren calls or howls to locate coyotes. Listen to where
they howl, wait 20 minutes, then take a stand in the area
where you heard the dog. Hope this helps. Let me know if
you have any luck.
